Yankees vs Tigers: Game 3 ALCS betting odds preview

Justin Verlander has been dynamite all season, but far from explosive when it comes to the Yankees, who have beaten him six of eight games. Still, the Tigers are big favorites in Game 3 of the ALCS.

Justin Verlander is the reigning AL MVP and Cy Young winner and just locked down the ALDS series with a shutdown performance.

But for all his excellence, when it comes to the New York Yankees, Verlander has been less than average.

In eight recent starts against New York, the Tigers are just 2-6. So with the Tigers big -185 home favorites on the Game 3 ALCS betting odds menu at most online sportsbooks, should more early action be on the pinstripers?

"The Yankees have looked out of sorts and it's almost like they have packed it in," said Scott Winstone, sportsbook manager at TopBet. "But the Yankees have won three of Philip Hughes' past four road starts, so he has some pedigree in this position."

How They Match Up:
When it comes to getting on base, the visiting Yankees rank No. 5 in the American League at 9 hits per game. That compares with Detroit’s No. 4 ranking in that category.

Defensively, New York features the American League's No. 6-rated defense on the road, allowing 4.2 runs per game. Detroit, meanwhile, comes in at No. 5 in the American League at home, scoring 4.9 runs per game.

In their last action, Detroit was a 3-0 winner on the road against the Yankees. Bettors on Detroit at +126 on the moneyline collected their winnings from that game, while the total score (3) sent UNDER bettors home happy as well. Detroit threw a shutout at New York in their last outing, using a shutdown performance by Anibal Sanchez to defeat New York 3-0 on Sunday.
