Lots of people bring pandering signs to baseball games. Lots of "IT'S MY BIRTHDAY! SHOW ME ON TV," always plenty of "[SLUGGER NAME] HIT IT HERE! [CRUDE DRAWING OF TARGET]" and of course the shameful and ubiquitous attempts to shoehorn the letters of the network into a sentiment about the game. ("my Family lOves baseXball.") But at Tuesday's Arizona Diamondbacks game, there was a new wrinkle in the pantheon of moderately-sad "look at me, please" signs.
While the D-backs were busy getting walloped on by the St. Louis Cardinals, the camera crew caught sight of a couple in the stands, with the gentleman holding a sign that read "1ST DATE - BIG LEAGUE," along with an approximation of the Diamondbacks' snake-D logo.
As in all blowouts, the broadcast team became overly fixated on this couple, with analyst Mark Grace trying to determine how well the date was going based on body language. It was all very surreal.
Following the reveal of the couple, the Diamondbacks fans at home were asked to participate in a text poll, which was only, like, medium-mean-spirited.
Later in the game, the Diamondbacks sent their roving reporter up to the sea of empty seats behind them to get an exclusive interview with the pair. The woman was allowed to cast the "deciding vote" as to whether there would be a second date, to which she responded (after a totally understandable pause) in the affirmative. Mark Grace then yelped out of sheer glee like he was Howard Dean announcing he was going to the White House.
I just have to say, this woman must be just the nicest, sweetest person of all time, because if you met up with someone to go to a baseball game on your first date and they had a sign advertising that fact ("BIG LEAGUE"), think about how awkward that could potentially be. Then think about realizing that you're on television with this goober and people are voting on whether you guys should go out again, including Tom Friendly there in the row in front of you lazily texting in his vote. To top it all off, they send a guy in a Diamondbacks polo out to interview you. Oh, also, dinner was canceled because your date's car broke down.
I wish these two all the luck in the world and look forward to August, when they show up again and the guy has a "1ST ATTEMPT AT ASKING HER TO MARRY ME - PLEASE NOW?" sign.
