The Atlanta Braves put the brakes on the New York Yankees this week, taking a series in the Bronx by pinning a drubbing on the Yanks Wednesday afternoon.
The Braves hit five homers Wednesday, including a pair by Jason Heyward, in beating New York 10-5, taking the rubber match of that series as +150 underdogs vs. Phil Hughes.
The win was only the third in the last 10 games for Atlanta, which now sits 3.5 games out of first place in the NL East.
Meanwhile, the loss was just the sixth in the last 26 games for the Yankees, who lead the AL East by 2.5 games over Baltimore.
Elsewhere around MLB Wednesday, the biggest favorite on the betting board eeked out a victory as Stephen Strasburg and the Nationals, at -220, snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over the Rays; the Red Sox, as -140 favorites, upped their record to 10-4 in Felix Doubront's starts with a 15-5 romp over the Marlins; and Jered Weaver, in his return from the DL, tossed six shut-out innings, leading the Angels to a 6-0 victory over the Giants as -160 chalk.
On the day, favorites won 12 of 15 games Wednesday. Also, even though eight teams scored seven or more runs yesterday, MLB totals leaned toward the 'unders' by a 10-5 margin.
Thursday's slate of games includes the Nationals and Gio Gonzalez at -140 over Matt Moore and the Rays; and Dice-K and the Red Sox at -135 over Carlos Zambrano and the Marlins.
