Mat Latos suffering from bone chips
Latos had been placed on a schedule that would allow him to start the first game of the playoffs, but swelling and soreness from the injury caused the Reds to push him back a couple of days. His last outing came on Sept. 25 against the Mets.
There is a good possibility that Latos will undergo offseason arthroscopic surgery to clean up his elbow once Cincinnati's post-season is over. Such a surgery would not threaten his availability for spring training.
Brandon Phillips to start Tuesday
Manager Dusty Baker told reporters Monday that second baseman Brandon Phillips will start Tuesday's wild card play-in game, reports Fayman.
Phillips was pulled from Saturday's game and diagnosed with a bruise after fouling a ball off of his shin. He remained out of the lineup for Sunday's regular-season finale.
With a one-game playoff, the Reds will want their best players on the field provided they are healthy enough. Phillips certainly fits that description and should play as much as he is able while the Reds remain in the playoffs.
