NLCS Game 2, Dodgers vs. Cardinals score update: 0-0, Top 3

Dilip Vishwanat

The Cardinals fail to cash in on an early opportunity to score.

Second baseman Matt Carpenter got the Cardinals started with a leadoff triple off of southpaw Clayton Kershaw in the home half of the first inning. Dodgers right fielder Yasiel Puig took an odd angle on the ball, allowing it to skip to the wall, and made a poor throw to the cutoff man, giving Carpenter the opportunity to safely scamper to third base. Kershaw, however, escaped unscathed by sending Carlos Beltran, Matt Holliday, and Yadier Molina back to the dugout in order.

Right-hander Michael Wacha, coming off a 7 1/3-inning, one-hit performance against the Pirates in the NLDS, has allowed only one hit through two innings of work—a single to Mark Ellis in the first inning. He has recorded two strikeouts and has not given up a walk.

Kershaw has matched his 22-year-old counterpart by throwing doughnuts on the scoreboard through the first two innings, with no walks and a strikeout.
