After Freese singled to lead off the fifth inning, Manager Mike Matheny came out to look at him while accompanied by a team trainer. The decision was made to leave him in the game, but after he advanced to second the team pulled him in favor of a pinch hitter.
It seems likely that in an important game Freese will be able to get back on the diamond for Game 4 on Tuesday. He did not appear to be limping too badly after sustaining the injury. If he cannot go, the Cardinals would likely move Matt Carpenter over to third and start rookie Kolten Wong at second base.
Freese has made a name for himself in the postseason since taking over the job at hot corner in St. Louis. In 39 playoff games, he has hit .316 with a 966 OPS and seven homers. He has had some struggles in the 2013 playoffs, however, collecting just five hits in 26 at-bats.
