World Series Game 3, Red Sox vs. Cardinals score update: St. Louis regains lead on Matt Holliday double

Ronald Martinez

Matt Holliday came through for the Cardinals with a clutch double in the seventh.

The St. Louis Cardinals regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs to take a 4-2 lead over the Boston Red Sox.

Kevin Siegrist replaced Seth Maness to start the top of the seventh. The southpaw struck out Jarrod Saltalamacchia to start the inning, then pinch-hitter Will Middlebrooks popped out for the second out of the inning. Middlebrooks pinch-hit for Stephen Drew, which moved Xander Bogaerts to shortstop.

Jonny Gomes then pinch-hit for the pitcher spot, hitting a flyout to center field to end the frame.

Craig Breslow relieved Felix Doubront in the bottom half of the seventh inning. Matt Carpenter hit a check-swing groundball at Bogaerts, who had to make a tough running throw. David Ortiz could not pick the throw at first, giving Carpenter an infield single.

Breslow barely grazed Carlos Beltran on the elbow guard with a fastball, putting two runners on with nobody out:

That caused John Farell to pull Breslow for Junichi Tazawa against the right-handed Matt Holliday. Holliday smacked a double past a diving Middlebrooks, driving in both runners to give the Cardinals a 4-2 lead.

Holliday advanced to third when Daniel Nava attempted to throw Beltran out at home. Tazawa recovered, striking out Matt Adams and Yadier Molina for the first two outs of the frame. David Freese worked a two-out walk, but Jon Jay hit a flyout to end the inning.
