MLB manager roundup: Cubs plan 2nd interviews; Lloyd McClendon to meet Mariners

Leon Halip

Both the Cubs and Mariners are making progress as they continue to search for a new manager.

Cubs conducting second interviews

The Chicago Cubs are planning on conducting second interviews with both A.J. Hinch and Rick Renteria, reports Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

That indicates that both men remain in contention for the Cubs' vacant managerial position while Rays' bench coach Dave Martinez and former MLB manager Manny Acta may be on the outside looking in. Chicago will also interview Eric Wedge and wants to talk with Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo following the World Series.

Hinch has some experience as a major league manager, spending parts of two years in the position with the Diamondbacks. He is currently vice president of professional scouting for the Padres. Renteria is San Diego's bench coach and has managed several years in the minor leagues. He has been seen as the favorite for the position.

The team is not expected to make an announcement on a new manager anytime soon.

Mariners interviewing McClendon

The Seattle Mariners are planning to interview Tigers hitting coach Lloyd McClendon as they continue to search for a new manager, reports Jon Morosi of Fox Sports.

Seattle interviewed McClendon back in 2010 when it was looking for a new manager, though Eric Wedge ended up winning the job. He was also a candidate for the Marlins following the 2012 season, but lost to Mike Redmond.

McClendon has previous managerial experience, heading the Pirates on the field from 2000 to 2005. He has also interviewed with Detroit this year as it searches for an heir to the newly retired Jim Leyland.
