2013 World Series Game 4, Red Sox vs. Cardinals score update: Boston leads St. Louis, 4-2, after 7 innings

The Cardinals cut into the three-run deficit created by Jonny Gomes with a pair of two-out hits in the seventh.

The Boston Red Sox hold a 4-2 lead over the St. Louis Cardinals through seven innings in Game 4 of the World Series on Sunday.

Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes hit a three-run home run off of Cardinals right-handed reliever Seth Maness in the top of the sixth to break a 1-1 tie after Dustin Pedroia started a two-out rally against Lance Lynn with a jam-shot single. Lynn walked David Ortiz before departing in favor of Maness, whose tendency to be just as hittable when facing right-handed batters such as Gomes as he is against lefties reared its ugly head.

Lynn is on the hook for the loss after being charged with three runs in 5⅔ innings.

The Cardinals cut their deficit to two runs on Matt Carpenter's RBI single with two outs in the seventh. Carpenter drove in Shane Robinson, who hit a pinch-hit double off of previously perfect Felix Doubront.

Doubront struck out three in 2⅔ flawless innings before the double. Craig Breslow, who surrendered the run-scoring hit to Carpenter, walked Carlos Beltran before being replaced by Junichi Tazawa. Tazawa retired Matt Holliday on a ground out to preserve the two-run lead.
