A first-inning RBI double by David Ortiz and a solo home run from Matt Holliday in the fourth inning stand as the only runs of the game thus far. Both starting pitchers have been nearly flawless aside from those innings.
After Holliday's game-tying blast, the Red Sox started a fifth-inning rally with base-hits from Xander Bogaerts and David Ross. However, Lester was unable to get a bunt down with one out and a batter later, Wainwright struck out Jacoby Ellsbury, who entered the at-bat 5-for-10 with runners in scoring position in the series, to end the threat.
Wainwright continued the momentum into the sixth inning, retiring the heart of Boston's order. That included Ortiz, who lined out sharply to center field to end a streak of nine consecutive plate appearances in which he reached base.
