2013 World Series Game 5, Red Sox vs. Cardinals score update: Boston leads, 3-1, heading into 9th inning

The Red Sox are an inning away from taking a 3-2 lead back to Boston.

The Boston Red Sox scored twice in the seventh inning against St. Louis Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright and hold a 3-1 lead entering the ninth in Game 5 of the World Series on Monday.

Red Sox catcher David Ross lined a double into left field to break a 1-1 tie that had been in place since Matt Holliday's solo home run in the fourth inning. Two batters later, Jacoby Ellsbury gave Boston an insurance run with a bloop single to Cardinals center fielder Shane Robinson, who gunned down Ross at the plate to end the inning.

Jon Lester and David Ortiz have been the stars of the game for Boston. Lester followed his scoreless performance in Game 1 with 7⅔ innings of one-run ball. He struck out seven. Ortiz went 3-for-4 with an RBI and is now 11-for-15 at the plate in the series.

Ortiz and Lester were both removed from the game at the same time on a double-switch. Red Sox manager John Farell called upon Koji Uehara to replace Lester with two outs and a runner on second in the eighth, and the dominant closer rewarded his skipper by striking out Matt Adams to end the inning.
