Nationals requested permission to interview Joe Girardi

The Yankees have already denied one team's request to interview Girardi.

The Washington Nationals have requested permission to interview New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi, reports David Kaplan of CSN Chicago.

Girardi is under contract with the Yankees until Oct. 31, so any team wishing to sign the manager must receive the Yankees permission to interview him. New York already denied the Chicago Cubs request to speak with Girardi, according to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune.

The Yankees and Girardi have begun negotiating a new contract, writes Andy McCullough of the Star-Ledger. A gap remains between the two sides, but both camps are looking for a quick resolution.

The Nationals are in need of a manager after Davey Johnson retired at the end of the season. Nationals bench coach Randy Knorr and Arizona Diamondbacks third base coach Matt Williams are considered the top candidates for the position.

The Cincinnati Reds may also request permission from the Yankees to interview Girardi, according to Kaplan. The Reds fired Dusty Baker on Friday, just three days after the team was eliminated in the NL Wild Card round.
