The Athletics broke through in the top half of the third. Coco Crisp started the frame with a single, the third straight inning Oakland placed their leadoff hitter on base. Josh Donaldson followed with a walk, but Anibal Sanchez struck out the next two hitters.
Yoenis Cespedes should have made the third out of the inning, hit a grounder at Miguel Cabrera. The third baseman misplayed the ball; the grounder bounced off his wrist into left field, allowing Crisp to score from second. Sanchez fanned Seth Smith to end the inning, but Oakland had struck first.
Jarrod Parker tossed his second straight perfect inning in the bottom of the third, recording his fifth groundout through ten batters to wrap up the inning.
Josh Reddick smacked a solo homer to kick-off the top of the fourth inning, driving a low strike over Torii Hunter's head in right field for the second run of the inning:
Stephen Vogt followed with a triple, crushing a 1-1 offering to right-center field. Crisp drove Vogt in with a sacrifice fly to left; the ball was not hit particularly deep, but an out of position Jhonny Peralta did not make a strong throw to the plate, giving the Athletics a 3-0 advantage.
The Tigers pulled even with the Athletics during the bottom half of the inning. Hunter led off the inning with a single, then Cabrera just missed a two-run homer, hitting a deep flyout instead. Prince Fielder followed with a single, putting runners on the corners for Victor Martinez.
Martinez roped a double down the first base line, driving in Hunter and putting two runners in scoring position with one out. Peralta followed with a single to left, driving in both runs. Parker retired Alex Avila and Omar Infante to end the inning, but not before the Tigers snapped a 20-inning scoreless streak.
