Stephen Drew free agency: Many teams 'moving quick' on SS

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY

Drew figures to draw a lot of interest from teams looking for a shortstop this offseason.

Several teams are 'moving quick' on free agent shortstop Stephen Drew, who has drawn heavy interest this offseason, reports Rob Bradford of WEEI.com.

After injuries limited him to just 165 games total between 2011-12, Drew bounced back in 2013. He played in 124 games for the Red Sox after signing a one-year deal worth $9.5 million and hit for a 777 OPS with 13 home runs. Drew also provides solid defense at shortstop.

The Red Sox offered Drew a qualifying offer, valued at $14.1 million for one season. He has until 5 p.m. ET on Monday to accept or decline. As teams continue to show interest, the chances of Drew taking the offer grow slimmer and slimmer as he eyes a multi-year contract.

Boston appears ready to move on from Drew at shortstop moving forward. The team has super prospect Xander Bogaerts ready to take over in 2014, making Drew expendable.
