Giants looking for stating pitching, outfield help

Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports

The Giants are searching for at least one more starter this winter, and may move Angel Pagan to left.

The San Francisco Giants will be searching the free-agent market for starting pitchers and potentially an outfielder, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

The Giants have three obvious starting pitchers in Matt Cain, Tim Lincecum and Madison Bumgarner. San Francisco declined the options for veteran starters Barry Zito and Ryan Vogelsong, and do not want to solely rely on internal candidates Yusmeiro Petit and Eric Surkamp to fill out the final two spots.

The club has shown interest in Matt Garza, Ervin Santana and Ubaldo Jimenez, three of the top pitchers available this winter. The Giants, however, feel good about their top three pitchers and may end up with a mid-rotation starter instead of paying the premium price for quality pitching, according to Heyman.

San Francisco is also looking for an additional outfielder. Angel Pagan and Hunter Pence are expected to start in 2014, while Gregor Blanco is better served as a fourth outfielder than a starter. The team is open to moving Pagan to left field and trying to acquire a center fielder, writes Heyman. Pagan missed the majority of the 2013 season with various leg injuries.
