Marlins place Miguel Olivo on restricted list

USA TODAY Sports

Olivo has reportedly decided to quit baseball. The Miami Marlins announced that Jordan Brown has been recalled to take his roster spot.

The Miami Marlins placed catcher Miguel Olivo on the restricted list Saturday after he apparently told the team that he was quitting baseball. The Marlins called up Jordan Brown to take his roster spot.

Olivo told the team his decision on Friday, according to Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post. The Marlins then beat the Cardinals while playing shorthanded.

MLB rules permit a player's former team to retain the rights of a player if they are placed on the restricted list. If Olivo chooses to come back to baseball in the future, then, another team will not be able to sign him without first paying compensation to the Marlins.

The 34-year-old Olivo has hit .203/.250/.392 in 33 games for the Marlins this season and was listed third on the Marlins depth chart at backstop behind Rob Brantley and Jeff Mathis. The Marlins were Olivo's seventh franchise over a 12 year career -- including two stints in Seattle.

Brown has played in 33 major league games over his career, with most of those coming in 2010 with the Indians. Over a minor league career that has spanned nine seasons, the 29-year-old Brown has a .819 OPS overall. Brown was hitting .259/.319/.350 for Triple-A New Orleans and has played corner outfield and first base over his career.
