Additionally, the Nationals have optioned Xavier Cedeno back to the minors to create roster room for Strasburg. Cedeno pitched twice in relief for Washington without allowing a run.
Strasburg, 24, will start Sunday's game against the Cleveland Indians. Manager Davey Johnson has said that the pitcher would not face a strict pitch count upon his return. Team doctors cleared Strasburg medically on Thursday after he threw a bullpen session without any lingering issues. Sunday is the earliest he was eligible to be activated from the DL.
Strasburg posted a 2.54 ERA with a 73:21 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 74.1 innings before the injury shut him down in early June. He has been a key component to a strong starting pitching staff in Washington that saw Ross Detwiler also return earlier this week.
