2013 MLB Draft results: RHP Alex Gonzalez selected by Rangers with No. 23 pick

USA TODAY Sports

The Rangers selected RHP Alex Gonzalez with the No. 23 overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft. Gonzalez was 9-5 with a 1.83 ERA in 15 starts for Oral Roberts this season, striking out 126 batters in 113 1/3 innings.

The Texas Rangers have selected Oral Roberts pitcher Alex Gonzalez with the 23rd pick in the 2013 MLB Amateur Draft.

A starting pitcher for the Golden Eagles, the 21-year-old Gonzalez rocketed up draft boards in his junior season with what Baseball America's Jim Callis termed "serious first-round helium." The 6'3, 200-pound right-hander put up his best numbers in his third year at Oral Roberts, posting 1.83 ERA in 15 starts and striking out better than a batter per inning.

Gonzalez features a "nasty fastball-slider combination" along with a still-developing change-up (per Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com), and has demonstrated the ability to command all three pitches. The righty sits in the low 90s with his heater, but has hit as high as 94 on the gun.

There is some question about whether Gonzalez will start or close at the big-league level, with Mayo positing that some view him as a "Mariano Rivera-like reliever" rather than a rotation arm.
