2013 MLB Draft results: Jonathon Crawford selected by Tigers with the No. 20 pick

The Tigers selected Florida RHP Jonathon Crawford with the No. 20 overall pick of the 2013 MLB Draft.

The Detroit Tigers have selected right-handed pitcher Jonathon Crawford out of Florida with the No. 20 pick of the 2013 MLB Amateur Draft.

Crawford drew the attention of scouts a year ago as a sophomore when he was regularly throwing his fastball in the mid-90s and had an above-average slider to complement it, Minor League Ball's John Sickels notes. Many saw him as a possible frontline starter in the big leagues one day, and when he threw a no-hitter in the regionals, his stock soared, Nick J. Faleris of Baseball Prospectus notes.

However, this spring hasn't been as kind to him. Crawford slipped down draft boards in the last year as his velocity fell a bit and his command wavered. He went just 3-6 with a 3.84 ERA for Florida this season, which could have dropped him even further down the draft, but this is still the same player who was hitting 97 mph just a year ago.

By the end of this season, Crawford's fastball was back into the mid-90s and that velocity is what made him such a high pick. The question is whether he can fine tune what can be a great slider and develop a changeup to go along with it. If he can, Crawford can be a top three starter in the big leagues. If not, he may just end up in the bullpen.
