Padres to activate Cameron Maybin from DL, option Kyle Blanks

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Maybin missed 46 games after injuring his right wrist while making a catch at Dodger Stadium in April.

The San Diego Padres will get their center fielder back on Thursday as Cameron Maybin will be activated from the disabled list before the Friars open a four-game series in Denver against the Colorado Rockies, the team announced late Wednesday night. Maybin missed 46 games with a right wrist impingement.

To make room for Maybin, the Padres optioned outfielder Kyle Blanks to Triple-A Tucson. Blanks on the season is hitting .273/.362/.434 with four home runs in 36 games, and he is second on the team in on-base percentage.

Maybin got off to a slow start for San Diego earlier this season at just 3-for-33 (.091) in 10 games and injured his wrist making a catch at Dodger Stadium on April 15. Maybin in nine games with Tucson on a minor league rehab assignment hit .323/.447/.645 with three home runs, a double and six runs scored.

Maybin, 26, is in the second year of a five-year, $25 million contract extension signed in March of 2012.

With Maybin out, the Padres used a combination of Chris Denorfia (20 starts), Will Venable (14 starts) and utility man Alexi Amarista (12 starts) in center field.
