The San Francisco Giants selected Florida high school shortstop Christian Arroyo with the No. 25 overall pick of the 2013 MLB Draft. Arroyo committed to play for Florida next season.
Ranked as the 102nd-best prospect in the draft by Baseball America, Arroyo starred for USA Baseball's 18-and-under team last year. Nevertheless, ESPN's Keith Law describes his offensive upside as "somewhat limited" and insists he won't remain at shortstop.
BA concurs, suggesting that "few scouts see him as a shortstop in the big leagues. Those who don't think he can catch see him as a tweener, not quick enough for second and not powerful enough for third base." He could wind up behind the plate, where his lack of an offensive profile may doom him to second-string status.
