Zack Wheeler reportedly will debut next Friday for Mets

USA TODAY Sports

The team is planning to have the pitcher make his major league debut at Citi Field against the Cubs.

The New York Mets plan on top pitching prospect Zack Wheeler making his major league debut on Friday, June 14, against the Chicago Cubs at Citi Field, a source told Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com.

The source claims that the date is not set in stone. The Mets have been waiting until after the "Super 2" deadline to promote Wheeler to the major league ball club. Delaying his time clock has ensured that Wheeler will not be eligible for arbitration until after the 2016 season, and under team control until after the 2019 season.

John Sickels of Minor League Ball ranked Wheeler as the second-best prospect in the Mets minor leagues heading into the 2013 season and the 15th-best prospect in all of baseball, writing the following about the starter:

Aside from some control wobbles in Triple-A, he had a terrific year. Projects as a number two starter. Can he duplicate what Matt Harvey did? It's possible.

The Mets acquired Wheeler from the San Francisco Giants in return for Carlos Beltran during the 2011 season. Wheeler has made 11 starts for Triple-A Las Vegas this season, posting a 3.86 ERA while striking out 59 batters in 58 1/3 innings. The 23-year-old is scheduled to start for Las Vegas tonight.
