The Padres made a last-minute decision to place Alonso on the disabled list Thursday night. The team originally planned to option Kyle Blanks to Triple-A Tucscon to make room for Cameron Maybin, who returned to the lineup against the Colorado Rockies after spending time on the DL with a wrist injury. Alonso, however, did not respond well when he attempted to swing the bat, which prompted the change of plans.
Alonso suffered the injury last week when he was hit by a pitch. The 26-year-old hit .285/.335/.416 in 212 plate appearances, but has not hit for as much power as some had hoped he would this season. The Padres moved the fences in at Petco Park before the 2013 season, but Alonso has only responded with six home runs.
