Marquis started Friday's game for the Padres and struggled, allowing six runs over 5.1 innings. His fastball also saw a significant drop in velocity. Following the game, Marquis told team officials that his elbow wasn't feeling right.
Marquis, 34, has a 4.05 ERA over 20 starts in 2013, but also has a 1.521 WHIP and a 5.2 BB/9 that almost matches a 5.5 K/9. He originally joined the team as a minor-league free agent mid-season 2012 after being cut from the Minnesota Twins.
The U-T suggests that the injury may mean that Marquis has pitched his last game as a member of the Padres.
San Diego called up pitcher Miles Mikolas from Triple-A Tucson. Mikolas has pitched in 26 games out of the bullpen for the Padres the last two years with a 3.51 ERA overall. He has posted excellent relief numbers in the minors throughout his career.
