When asked about first baseman Justin Morneau, making $6 million this season, the team responded by saying he was "too expensive." This leaves the Orioles probably unable to make any major moves before the deadline, and leaving them either to what they have internally or for very minor and inexpensive acquisitions.
The team apparently used its budget for the deadline this year to acquire Scott Feldman from the Cubs. Feldman, 30, has a 5.79 ERA in three starts so far for the Orioles, but had an ERA of 3.46 with the Cubs before he was dealt.
The Orioles received a boost from Manny Machado's call-up during last year's stretch run, and they could receive a similar one from Henry Urrutia or Kevin Gausman this season, although it is unfair to assume they will perform at the level of Machado.
The team was at one point rumored to be in on Cliff Lee, but it appears as though the $70 million or so he has left on his contract prices Baltimore out of any realistic chance at Lee.
