Ortiz, upset over a pair of called strikes from home plate umpire Tim Timmons, used his bat to destroy two bullpen phones in the visitors' dugout at Camden Yards. He also threw an elbow pad at Timmons that missed its intended target.
Ortiz believed that he was disrespected by the strikes, and that because it is his job to hit that it is not fair to take an at-bat away from him.
He followed up the ejection by going 4-for-4 the next day with a home run, so it does not appear to be a lingering issue for the Red Sox slugger.
Ortiz, 37, currently has a triple-slash line of .329/.413/.605 for the Red Sox. He is a big part of the team that has surpassed most expectations, and it would have been a huge blow to see him miss games over the incident.
