Matt Garza rumors: Nationals express interest in Cubs P, according to report

USA TODAY Sports

The Nationals seem ready to enter the Matt Garza sweepstakes.

The Washington Nationals have shown interest in trading for Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Matt Garza, the Washington Post's Adam Kilgore reported.

The Nationals haven't made a formal proposal, Kilgore writes, but the team is looking into what it would take to acquire the starter as it tries to bolster a starting rotation that remains questionable beyond its top three starters: Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez and Jordan Zimmermann.

Garza, 29, will be a free agent for the first time after this season. Any team that trades for him would not receive a compensatory draft pick if Garza were to sign elsewhere after the season, according to baseball's current collective bargaining agreement.

Garza didn't make his 2013 debut until May 21 with a latissimus dorsi strain in his shoulder. He's allowed a run or fewer in his last four starts and has pitched at least seven innings in each of those appearances. With Ricky Nolasco now a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers following Saturday's trade with the Miami Marlins, Garza is considered one of the top starting pitchers remaining on the trade market.
