Orioles trade rumors: Baltimore still working on deals for Morse, Willingham

USA TODAY Sports

The Orioles are looking to add a right-handed bat before the Aug. 31 playoff roster deadline.

The Baltimore Orioles continue to work on deals for a pair of players claimed on the waiver wire, Seattle Mariners outfielder Michael Morse and Minnesota Twins outfielder Josh Willingham, reports Jon Morosi of Fox Sports.

Baltimore placed a claim for Willingham on Wednesday, then won a claim for Morse later in the day. The Orioles will need to finalize a deal for either player by Friday afternoon.

It seems unlikely that the Orioles will make trades for both players. Willingham and Morse are both right-handed hitting outfielders with some power. Either player would make a nice platoon partner for Nate McLouth in left against left-handed pitching, while also receiving some at-bats at DH.

Morse and Willingham have both struggled this season; Morse entered Friday batting .226/.283/.410 while Willingham is hitting .211/.345/.385. Morse will be a free-agent at the end of the season, but Willingham is due $7 million in 2014.
