Salvador Perez injury: Royals catcher placed on 7-day DL with concussion

Perez underwent concussion tests Saturday night after being struck in the catchers mask by a foul tip.

The Kansas City Royals have placed catcher Salvador Perez on the seven-day disabled list with concussion symptoms, reports Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star. The Royals have called up catcher Brett Hayes to replace him.

Perez was struck in the catcher's mask by a foul tip during Saturday night's game. Though he appeared visibly shaken, he stayed in the game. He then spent the night in a hospital while undergoing concussion tests. The Royals believe Perez is only suffering from a mild concussion, but still chose to place him on the special concussion DL.

Hayes has played parts of the previous four seasons with the Marlins, with a .627 OPS over 143 major league games. Playing for Triple-A Omaha this season, Hayes has hit .231/.280/.441 with 11 home runs. He is also known as a strong defensive backstop.

The Royals also put pitcher Wade Davis on emergency leave to tend to a family matter. He will miss between three and seven days. Pitcher Will Smith was called up to take his roster spot.
