Jackie Robinson statue defaced with racial slurs

Keystone

The Brooklyn statue is now covered up to hide the vandalism.

If you felt some love for humanity today, it's probably because you didn't hear the news about the Jackie Robinson statue located outside the Brooklyn Cyclones stadium yet: according to the New York Daily News, the statue was defaced with racial slurs and swastikas.

The slurs, which came through the use of both a black marker and spray paint, were on both the bronze statue, which depicts Robinson with former Brooklyn Dodgers teammate Pee Wee Reese, as well as at the base. According to Billy Harner, the director of communications for the Cyclones, the slurs could not be removed from the stone base, and are currently covered up so that they cannot be seen.

The Daily News reports that this act of vandalism is being treated as a hate crime by police, who are searching for those responsible.
