The Nationals had Strasburg playing catch from 120 feet on Sunday. The current plan is for him to throw a bullpen session on Monday in preparation for a Thursday start.
Strasburg had been slated to start for the Nationals last Friday, but he was scratched due to right forearm tightness. Washington gave him medication to help his recovery. Ross Ohlendorf started in place of Strasburg.
If Strasburg proves unable to start on Thursday for any reason, the Nationals would likely call on Ohlendorf to make another spot start.
Strasburg missing more time would be a blow to a Nationals team that is on the verge of falling out of contention for a playoff spot. Washington is currently 5.5 games back of the Reds for the second National League wild card spot. They are the only team with a chance to catch Cincinnati at this point.
Strasburg has a 2.98 ERA and 1.04 WHIP over 28 starts in 2013.
