Royals expected to promote Yordano Ventura

Ventura will likely pitch out of the bullpen in Kansas City.

The Kansas City Royals are expected to promote pitcher Yordano Ventura on Monday, reports Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star.

Ventura has made 25 starts this season between Double-A and Triple-A, going 8-6 with a 3.14 ERA over 134 2/3 innings. The right-hander has flashed impressive stuff, racking up 155 strikeouts, but has issued 53 walks.

The 22-year-old will likely work as a reliever in Kansas City. Ventura can hit 100-mph on the radar gun, giving the Royals another weapon out of the bullpen.

Royals Triple-A manager Mike Jirschele had high praises for Ventura in June, telling Rob White of the Omaha World-Herald:

"He's probably the most exciting guy to come through since Zack Greinke came through. And he has a better fastball than Zack had. We're excited to get him out here."

John Sickels of Minor League ball rated Ventura as the third best prospect in the Royals farm system, and the 93rd highest prospect in MLB.

Ventura is not currently on the Royals 40-man roster. The team will likely move Carlos Pena off the 40-man roster after the first baseman underwent appendectomy surgery.
