AL Wild Card standings: Rays regain top spot; Orioles, Yankees, Royals gain ground

Al Messerschmidt

All six teams in the AL Wild Card race are still within 3½ games of one another.

The Tampa Bay Rays regained the top spot in the American League Wild Card race with a 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday.

Desmond Jennings' 12th-inning walk-off single could have knocked the Rangers out of the second AL Wild Card spot, but the Cleveland Indians again failed to capitalize and remain a half-game back after falling to the Kansas City Royals, 7-2. The Royals -- along with the New York Yankees, who squeezed past the Blue Jays -- climbed to within 2½ games of Texas.

Like the Rays, the Baltimore Orioles needed 12 innings to pick up a victory on Wednesday. The Orioles' 5-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox -- the third straight win for the O's -- pulled them to within a game of Texas and prevented Boston from becoming the first team in baseball to clinch a playoff spot.

Here are the updated standings, which still show six teams within 3½ games of each other:
