Max Scherzer wins 20th as Tigers beat White Sox

USA TODAY Sports

Scherzer became the second Tigers pitcher to reach 20 wins since 1991.

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Max Scherzer became the first pitcher in baseball this year to reach 20 wins in a 12-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Friday.

Scherzer allowed a two-run homer to former teammate Avisail Garcia, but was otherwise solid in six innings, surrendering three runs on six hits while notching three strikeouts. As has been the case for much of the season, Detroit's offense didn't hurt Scherzer's quest for his 20th win, providing 12 runs on 18 hits.

Scherzer is now 20-3 with a 3.00 ERA along with 230 strikeouts against just 50 walks in 2013. Scherzer's 20-win season is the 45th in Tigers history. Justin Verlander won 24 games in 2011, but prior to that, a Detroit pitcher hadn't reached 20 victories since Bill Gullickson in 1991.
