Jacoby Ellsbury injury: John Farrell 'optimistic' Red Sox OF can return Wednesday

Ellsbury has missed most of September with a compression fracture in his foot, but is nearing a return to the Red Sox lineup.

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell said Sunday there is a chance outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury could return to the lineup on Wednesday, reports Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald.

More Red Sox coverage: Over the Monster

Farrell says that is the "optimistic" timetable for Ellsbury, who has been out since Sept. 5 with a compression fracture in his right foot. There is a chance Ellsbury will need another few days past Wednesday. With the Minor League season over, Boston cannot send Ellsbury on a rehab assignment to test the injury in a game setting.

Ellsbury resumed baseball activities on Friday. The Red Sox have had the free-agent-to-be throwing and hitting off a tee.

The important thing for the Red Sox will be to have Ellsbury healthy and ready to go for the playoffs. Boston has already clinched the AL East and currently holds the best record in the MLB.

Ellsbury, 30, has hit .299/.355/.424 with a league-leading 52 stolen bases over 131 games in 2013.
