Tigers clinch AL Central with win over Twins

One night after clinching a postseason berth, the Tigers can really celebrate.

The Detroit Tigers clinched the American League Central division title with a 1-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday.

Celebrate with SB Nation's Tigers community, Bless You Boys.

Torii Hunter hit an RBI single in the top of the first inning to provide Tigers starter Max Scherzer with all the run support he needed. Scherzer worked around six walks by limiting the Twins to two hits in seven innings. He struck out 10 batters en route to his 21st victory of the season.

The division crown marks Detroit's third in as many seasons, and the Tigers will make their fourth postseason appearance under manager Jim Leyland, who notched his 700th victory with the team on Wednesday.

Leyland is the third skipper in Tigers history to reach that mark, joining Sparky Anderson and Hughie Jennings.

Though the Tigers' win ended the second-place Cleveland Indians' shot at a division title, the Tribe remain a game ahead of the Texas Rangers in the AL Wild Card race after beating the Chicago White Sox, 7-2.
