Henderson Alvarez throwing no-hitter vs. Tigers through 9 innings

The Marlins haven't scored, though.

Miami Marlins right-hander Henderson Alvarez hasn't allowed a hit through nine innings Sunday afternoon, but the Marlins remain in a scoreless tie with the Detroit Tigers at Marlins Park.

Alvarez recorded just four strikeouts and 98 pitches thrown through nine frames. That low pitch total could make it possible for manager Mike Redmond to send him out one more time.

The young starter only faced three batters over the minimum in nine innings. Prince Fielder was hit by a pitch in the first inning, Jose Iglesias reached on an error on a ground ball to shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria in the top of the fifth and Alvarez issued his first walk, a four-pitch pass, to Andy Dirks with two out in the top of the ninth.

The last player to pitch nine no-hit innings only to see the game go to extra innings was Pedro Martinez on June 3, 1995. He came back for the Montreal Expos in the top of the 10th inning and surrendered a double to the first batter he faced.

The Tigers are scheduled to send Jhonny Peralta, Hernan Perez and Brayan Pena to the plate in the 10th.
