Tampa Bay played the Toronto Blue Jays in the early game, escaping the Rogers Centre with a 7-6 victory. The Rays scored six runs in the first inning and held a 7-0 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Blue Jays nearly mounted an impressive comeback. Fernando Rodney ended up recording the four-out save, his 37th save of the season.
Texas received a solid start Yu Darvish and 3 1/3 shutout innings from its bullpen, earning a 6-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Darvish held the Angels to two runs on four hits over 5 2/3 innings, striking out eight. Neal Cotts, Robbie Ross, Tanner Scheppers and Joe Nathan closed out the game for Texas. Craig Gentry helped spark the Rangers offense, going 2-for-3 with two singles, two RBI, one walk, two stolen bases and a run scored.
The Rangers edged the Rays 4-3 in their season series, giving Texas home-field advantage in the tiebreaker game. Game 163 will start at 8:07 p.m. ET, with coverage coming on TBS.
The winner of the tiebreaker game will play the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 8:07 p.m. ET. The Indians secured the No. 1 seed on Sunday with a 5-1 win over the Minnesota Twins.
