Rays vs. Rangers score update: Tampa Bay jumps on top early, 1-0

Ronald Martinez

Rangers starter Marin Perez got into some trouble in the first inning, but escaped a bases-loaded conundrum having allowed only one run.

The Tampa Bay Rays have built a 1-0 lead over the Texas Rangers after two innings in the American League tiebreaker game in Arlington, Texas, on Monday.

Delmon Young hit a sacrifice fly to score Wil Myers after the Rays loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first. The damage against Rangers hurler Martin Perez could have been more significant had lead-off hitter Desmond Jennings not tried to leg out a double on a line drive to left field.

The Rays still had a chance to tack on at least one more, but Perez struck out Sean Rodriguez with runners on the corners to end the inning.

Texas was plagued by its own baserunning error in the bottom half of the inning. Elvis Andrus drew a one-out walk against Rays starter David Price but was picked off at first base during the next at-bat.

Nelson Cruz lined out to first base in his first plate appearance since returning from his 50-game Biogenesis-related suspension.
