After hitting his 25th home run of the season to lead off the fourth inning against Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Rick Porcello, Ortiz doubled off of Tigers reliever Al Alburquerque for the historic hit.
The 37-year-old veteran received a long standing ovation from the home crowd after the hit.
Ortiz, who in July was selected to the American League All-Star team for the ninth time in his career, entered Monday hitting .310/.394/.550 in his 17th MLB season. He boasts a career batting line of .286/.381/.548 with 425 home runs.
