Rangers infielder Jurickson Profar is expected to miss 10 to 12 weeks with a torn muscle in his shoulder, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Jeff Wilson. Profar was projected to start the season as Texas' starting second baseman.
Texas opens 2014 in Arlington against the Phillies in just over one week, so the injury could cause Profar to miss the first two months of the season.
In a worst-case scenario, the 21-year-old could be sidelined until July.
Profar hit just .234/.308/.336 last season in 324 plate appearances, but he's often mentioned as one of the best young players in the game. He's expected to be a threat offensively, and he's already shown solid glove work at the major league level.
If he's unable to return quickly, Texas' depth in the middle infield -- a strength it dealt this offseason -- could become a concern for the club as it attempts to overtake the Athletics in the AL West.
