MLB news: Yovani Gallardo exits with leg injury, Chris Davis blasts 3 home runs

The Brewers lost their ace early in a shutout loss, while last season's home run king found his power stroke on Tuesday.

Brewers starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo left in the fourth inning of Milwaukee's game against the Braves on Tuesday with an apparent left leg injury.

Gallardo landed awkwardly on the front of the mound after trying to field a grounder hit by Atlanta starter Julio Teheran. Gallardo missed the ball, and second baseman Scooter Gennett was unable to back him up, resulting in Teheran reaching on the play. Gennett was charged with an error, and Gallardo exited the game before the next batter stepped in the box.

The 28-year-old right-hander's X-rays were negative, the team announced, but whether he'll miss any time is currently unknown. Gallardo entered Tuesday with a 3.07 ERA in 55⅔ innings spanning nine starts for the National League Central-leading Brewers.

Davis homers three times

Orioles first baseman Chris Davis entered the team's Tuesday contest against the Pirates with only three home runs. He now has twice that many after a three-homer performance in Baltimore's 9-2 rout in Pittsburgh.

Davis launched his first homer of the game off of Pirates starter Francisco Liriano, who is still winless in 2014. Davis followed with a home run in the seventh off of Jared Hughes before going yard again two innings later to secure his second career three-homer game.

Cubs beat Tanaka

Yankees rookie Masahiro Tanaka tossed another quality start, allowing three earned runs on eight hits in six innings, but the Japanese sensation was outdueled by Jason Hammel in the Cubs' 6-1 win.

Hammel allowed only one run on four hits in 5⅔ innings and was helped by Luis Valbuena, who doubled twice and had three total hits against the Yankees starter, who had not lost a game in a long time:
