Gerrit Cole placed on 15-day disabled list with shoulder fatigue
Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole was placed on the 15-day disabled list -- retroactive to Wednesday -- with shoulder fatigue, according to MLB.com's Stephen Pianovich. Pittsburgh pitching coach Ray Searage said the team "just want[s] to be cautious" with its young starter.
Cole, 23, has put up a 3.64 ERA in 12 starts for the Pirates this season with 69 strikeouts and 25 walks in 76⅔ innings. He has been the Pirates' most valuable starter so far, according to FanGraphs, although Charlie Morton has a better ERA.
Pittsburgh recalled left hander Jeff Locke to replace Cole. Locke has thrown just 5⅓ Major League innings this season, and he's currently sporting a 4.14 ERA for Triple-A Indianapolis, but he was effective in the Pirates' rotation last year.
Mitch Moreland will miss 3 months due to ankle surgery
Rangers first baseman Mitch Moreland will undergo ankle reconstruction surgery, according to Texas general manager Jon Daniels (h/t MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan). Daniels said the injury has been bothering Moreland all season, which would partially explain his diminished production. In 184 plate appearances this year, Moreland has hit just two home runs and posted a .246/.297/.347 batting line.
With Moreland joining Prince Fielder on the disabled list, the Rangers could opt to start in-season acquisition Donnie Murphy at first. Texas also has experienced infielder Brent Lillibridge in the minors.
Puig, Gordon suffer hip injuries
Both Yasiel Puig and Dee Gordon left the Dodgers' extra-innings loss to the Rockies on Saturday with hip injuries. Both players will be held out of the lineup on Sunday. The club hasn't opted to place either on the disabled list, so they could both be back in the lineup sometime next week. They are officially listed as day-to-day.
A few minor injuries won't cause the Dodgers to dip into their incredibly deep organization for players like Joc Pederson or Alexander Guerrero. Guerrero won't be called up anytime soon, as he's still recovering from having his ear masticated upon by former Dodger Miguel Olivo.
