The Angels' starting shortstop will replace injured Royals outfielder Alex Gordon.

Los Angeles Angels shortstop Erick Aybar will join the American League All-Star team as an injury replacement for Royals outfielder Alex Gordon, Major League Baseball announced on Thursday.

Aybar is in the midst of one of his finest big league seasons, entering Thursday hitting .283/.318/.417 -- good for an OPS+ of 108 -- and contributing 3.0 WAR to the 53-37 Angels. He is one of two shortstops in baseball -- the other being National League starter Troy Tulowitzki -- to amass 45 runs scored and 45 RBI. The 30-year-old Dominican is a first-time All-Star and the first Halos shortstop to earn a selection since Gary DiSarcina in 1995.

Gordon earned his second career All-Star selection after hitting .268/.348/.425 through 88 games. He has been dealing with a sore right wrist, though the Royals have yet to place him on the disabled list.

Aybar is the fourth injury replacement to be added to the AL squad, joining Twins catcher Kurt Suzuki, Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager and Red Sox reliever Koji Uehara.
