The New York Yankees have acquired Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy on Sunday, as first reported by MLB Daily Dish's Chris Cotillo. Left-handed pitcher Vidal Nuno will head to the Diamondbacks and a $1 million bonus to McCarthy will complete the trade, according to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported that the Yankees had been discussing sending to the Diamondbacks on Saturday.
McCarthy was in his second season with the Diamondbacks and has a 3-10 record with a 5.01 ERA in 18 starts this season. However, he has 93 strikeouts in 109.2 innings and has walked just 20 batters. Acquiring McCarthy is an attempt by New York at replacing CC Sabathia, who is likely out for the year with a knee injury.
Nuno has made 14 starts in 17 appearances this season, but has a 2-5 record and a 5.42 ERA to show for it. He has been prone to allowing the home run this season, serving up 15 in 78 innings. He had shown some improvement in his final June start when he held the Red Sox to two hits over 5.2 innings (picking up his second win), but on July 2 the Rays hit him for four runs on eight hits over five innings in a 6-3 loss.
