Brandon Phillips injury: Reds 2B leaves game with sprained left thumb

Rick Scuteri-USA TODAY Sports

The normally-durable Phillips suffered an injury that, at first glance, appeared to be serious, though X-rays on his left thumb were negative.

Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips left in the eighth inning of the team's game against the Cubs on Wednesday with a sprained left thumb. The team announced that X-rays on the thumb were negative.

While diving in an attempt to catch a grounder off the bat of Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo, Phillips' left wrist got caught underneath his body. Rizzo reached base, and Phillips was attended to by trainers before being removed from the game in favor of Todd Frazier, who took over at third base while Ramon Santiago moved to second.

Phillips has averaged 150 games per season since 2006 and started in 86 of the Reds' 91 games in 2014. The 33-year-old veteran has been on the disabled list only once in his career. That was in 2008, when he had surgery in September to repair a broken finger.

Phillips was 2-for-3 with an RBI before the injury occurred. In 359 plate appearances entering Wednesday, Phillips was hitting .269/.305/.390.
