Recap: Boston vs. NY Yankees

Sports Network | June 9, 2009

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Josh Beckett was dominant on the mound as the Boston Red Sox stayed perfect on the year against their bitter division rival Yankees with a 7-0 rout of New York in the opener of a three-game set from Fenway Park.

The Red Sox are 6-0 against the Yankees on the year and have outscored the club 45-23 over the six games. Boston hasn't won seven in a row against New York in a single season since 1974. Tuesday's victory moved Boston into a tie with New York atop the American League East standings.

Beckett (7-2) lasted six innings and gave up one hit while fanning eight and walking two. Beckett picked up where he left off, as he carried a no- hitter into the seventh inning against Detroit in his previous start. Manny Delcarmen, Ramon Ramirez and Daniel Bard combined to throw a one-hitter over the final three frames.

David Ortiz hit a two-run homer, just his third of the year, for Boston, which has alternated wins and losses for the past five games. J.D. Drew and Nick Green also drove in two runs each in the win, and Mike Lowell had an RBI.

Boston was without center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, who was out of the lineup with a right shoulder strain. Mark Kotsay got the start in center and went 1- for-3 and scored a run.

Robinson Cano and Brett Gardner had the only hits for the Yankees, who had won two straight coming in. A.J. Burnett (4-3) took the loss after getting roughed up for five runs -- three earned -- on five hits and five walks in 2 2/3 innings of work.

The Red Sox got on the board on the second inning. Lowell led off with a walk and Ortiz followed with a homer to straightaway center that made it 2-0. Jason Varitek was then called out on strikes before Kotsay walked.

Green grounded to third for what looked like an inning-ending double play, but Alex Rodriguez had trouble getting the ball out of his glove and all runners were safe. Dustin Pedroia grounded out to leave the runners in scoring position, and Drew belted a two-run double off the Green Monster to balloon it to 4-0.

Boston made it 5-0 in the third, as Varitek drew a two-out walk, moved to second on Kotsay's single and crossed home as Green doubled to left.

Lowell added an RBI single off Brett Tomko in the fourth to make it a six-run game, and Green slugged a solo shot to left off Jose Veras in the seventh to account for the final margin.

Beckett has now won his last three starts and five decisions. Over his last three starts, Beckett has given up just one earned run in 28 2/3 innings...After setting a major league record by going 18 straight games without an error, the Yankees have committed an error in seven straight...Burnett was 5-0 lifetime versus the Red Sox with a 3.52 ERA in nine starts coming into Tuesday.
