Recap: Florida vs. NY Mets

Sports Network | August 26, 2009

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Ross Gload went 2-for-4 and drove in a run, and Dan Uggla had a run batted in, as the Florida Marlins edged the New York Mets, 2-1, in the opener of a three-game set at Land Shark Stadium.

Hanley Ramirez and Jeremy Hermida each scored for Florida, which has split its last four games.

Sean West (5-5) worked six innings, giving up a run on six hits in taking the win. The young lefty, who had lost three of his last four decisions coming in, walked three and struck out a pair. Leo Nunez notched his 15th save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.

"Every pitch, every batter is huge when you get to this point in the season," said West. "I just try to stay focused."

Fernando Tatis had an RBI single for the Mets, who have dropped four in a row and six of seven overall.

Nelson Figueroa (1-3) was tagged with the loss despite tossing five solid innings. The veteran right-hander allowed two runs -- one earned -- on four hits, struck out two and didn't issue a walk. He was making the start in place of ace Johan Santana, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list earlier on Tuesday with bone chips in his pitching elbow that will require season-ending surgery.

"I had a couple of good outings and a couple of bad ones," said Figueroa. "I'm not done pitching and trying to win a spot for next year."

The Mets opened the scoring in the top of the fourth on Tatis' RBI single to center, but Florida quickly tied it in the home half. Ramirez was hit by a pitch leading off the inning and made it to third when John Baker's slow roller was booted, then thrown away by first baseman Daniel Murphy, resulting in two errors on the play. Uggla's fielder's choice grounder evened the game.

Gload put the Marlins in front, 2-1, with a two-out single up the middle in the fifth. The Fish squandered a bases loaded, one-out situation in the sixth and both bullpens limited the chances the next couple of innings.

Nunez came on for the top of the ninth and slammed the door by retiring the side in order to end the game.

Prior to the game, the Mets recalled left-handed pitcher Pat Misch and first baseman/outfielder Nick Evans from Triple-A Buffalo. The moves were necessary after the club traded left-handed reliever Billy Wagner to Boston and Santana was placed on the DL...Marlins first baseman Nick Johnson was held out of the lineup with a right hamstring injury...Mets outfielder Gary Sheffield and Florida catcher Baker each left with back injuries...The Marlins have won six of 10 versus the Mets this year and took two of three when the clubs met in Miami from April 10-12.
