(Sports Network) - The Chicago White Sox try to string back-to-back wins together this evening when they play the second test of their four-game series with the New York Yankees at U.S. Cellular Field.

Their should be a buzz in the air in the Windy City, as well, as the White Sox pulled off a blockbuster trade in acquiring former Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy from the San Diego Padres for four players, one of which was lefty Clayton Richard, who was scheduled to start tonight's contest.

The White Sox took the opener of this set in dramatic fashion on Thursday, as Dewayne Wise's two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the ninth lifted Chicago to a 3-2 win. Gordon Beckham picked up a pair of hits and drove in a run for the White Sox, who snapped a three-game skid.

Matt Thornton (5-2) got the win despite being saddled with a blown save, allowing a run and two hits over 1 1/3 relief frames. Starter Gavin Floyd went the first 7 2/3 innings, scattering four hits and a run with a career-best 10 strikeouts.

"I just tried to make pitches and got some strikeouts today," said Floyd. "I tried to keep us in the lead, with a 1-0 lead you have a small window for error."

Nick Swisher had tied the game in the ninth with a solo home run for the Yankees, who had won three of four coming in.

Phil Hughes (4-3) was charged with the deciding run over two full innings. Andy Pettitte turned in a solid start, yielding five hits and two runs -- one earned -- over 6 1/3 innings.

"We're not winning when I pitch right now and that's frustrating for sure," said Pettitte.

Heading to the hill for the White Sox tonight instead of Richard will be righty D.J. Carrasco, who is 3-1 with a 3.58 ERA in 34 appearances out of the bullpen.

Richard, though, lost his only other start to the Yankees last September despite a solid effort that saw him allow two runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings.

New York, meanwhile, will counter with righty Sergio Mitre, who will be making his third start of the season. After winning his season debut, Mitre did not get a decision on Sunday against Oakland, as he surrendered four runs and nine hits in just five innings.

Mitre has faced the White Sox twice and is 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA in those contests.

New York won five of its seven matchups with the White Sox last season and has won 10 of the previous 14 meetings in the series, including five of the past seven in the Windy City.
