Sports Network | June 24, 2009

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - David Wright went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and Nick Evans went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, as the New York Mets demolished the St. Louis Cardinals, 11-0, in the third test of a four- game set at Citi Field.

Wright tied a career high with four hits in a game, while Evans had his first two hits of the season for the Mets, who had lost three of their last four coming into Wednesday. Fernando Tatis went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, while Ryan Church went 3-for-4 with two RBI and as many runs scored for New York, which exploded for 16 hits after having just two hits in a 3-0 defeat on Tuesday.

Fernando Nieve (3-0) gave up just three hits with five strikeouts and four walks in six frames to collect his third straight victory. Nieve's contract was purchased from Triple-A Buffalo on June 5 after New York placed J.J. Putz on the 15-day disabled list.

Brendan Ryan went 2-for-3 for the Cardinals, who had just four hits and had won four of their past five games coming into the game. Brad Thompson (2-3) got rocked in five-plus frames, allowing five runs on eight hits with one walk to have a two-start winning streak snapped.

The Mets scored the only run they would eventually need in the first inning. Luis Castillo singled and Wright doubled down the left-field line to put runners on second and third with one out. Church then hit an RBI single to left. Tatis hit into an inning-ending double play.

St. Louis loaded the bases with two outs in the third, but Rick Ankiel went down swinging to end the threat.

The Mets put a three-spot on the board in the fourth to extend their margin to four. Wright singled, moved to third on Church's double to left, and scored on Tatis' groundout. Two batters later, Evans drove a Thompson offering over the wall in left field.

New York extended its gap to seven by putting a three-spot on the board in the sixth. Tatis hit an RBI single off Josh Kinney, while Brian Schneider stroked a two-run double to right later in the inning.

The Mets continued to pour on the runs in the seventh, putting four more runs on the board to make it an 11-0 game. Church hit an RBI double, Tatis stroked an RBI single, Fernando Martinez reached base on a force attempt that scored Church, and Daniel Murphy hit a sac fly to account for the runs in the frame.

New York selected the contract of infielder Argenis Reyes from Triple-A Buffalo and designated left-handed pitcher Jon Switzer for assignment on Wednesday.
